Evan Pugh University Professorships at Penn State

The Evan Pugh University Professorship is Penn State’s highest faculty honor, awarded to those whose careers exemplify sustained academic excellence, groundbreaking scholarship, and meaningful contributions to teaching and student success. Named for Evan Pugh, the University’s first president and a pioneering educator and scientist, this distinction recognizes faculty whose leadership has advanced both their disciplines and the mission of the institution.

Evan Pugh Professors are selected through a rigorous peer-review process led by a committee of current and past honorees. Nominees must demonstrate international recognition in their field, a history of exceptional research or creative work, and a deep commitment to teaching and mentorship. Fewer than 100 faculty have received this title since its establishment in 1960, and only a select number remain active at any given time—underscoring the rare and prestigious nature of the award.

This is not simply an accolade for past achievements; it is a recognition of faculty whose influence continues to shape their academic communities, inspire their students, and elevate the reputation of Penn State on a global stage. Evan Pugh Professorships are permanent designations and remain with the faculty member into emeritus status.
