Sabbatical Leaves at Penn State

Sabbatical leave is a valuable opportunity that allows eligible faculty to dedicate time to focused research, creative work, or pedagogical development. It's designed to enhance your scholarly contributions and enrich the university community when you return.

Who is eligible?

  • Tenure-line faculty become eligible after six full contract years in a tenure-track position and may apply during their seventh year for a sabbatical in their eighth year. Those with early or immediate tenure may apply after five years.
  • Non-tenure-line research faculty (assistant, associate, research professors) are eligible after seven full contract years of service.
  • Note: Teaching or clinical faculty on non-tenure lines are not eligible.

Why pursue a sabbatical?
A sabbatical offers the freedom to engage deeply in scholarly or creative projects, gain new expertise, develop teaching strategies, or explore research collaborations. It's not just time away—it's an investment in your long-term impact and contribution to Penn State.

How to apply:

  • Eligibility is based on completed full contract years in your current appointment.
  • Consult the AC17 Sabbatical Leave policy and FAQs for guidance on eligibility, timing, and application procedures.
  • Prepare your proposal according to the policy’s guidelines.
  • Applications are required to be submitted per the documented timelines in AC17, with formal review by the Office of the Provost.
