The Atherton Professorship honors a rare and distinguished group of faculty—those who have held the title of Evan Pugh University Professor and continue to make meaningful contributions to Penn State after retirement. Named for George W. Atherton, one of the University’s most influential presidents, this professorship celebrates sustained academic excellence, intellectual leadership, and ongoing service to the institution.
Atherton Professors are individuals whose impact does not end with retirement. These emeritus faculty members remain active in scholarly or creative work, research, teaching, public engagement, or academic leadership. Through this title, Penn State affirms the value of their continued involvement and recognizes the ways in which their expertise and insight enrich our academic community.
Appointments are made for a three-year term and may be renewed. While Atherton Professorships do not carry the same funding or privileges as Evan Pugh appointments, they do provide an avenue for continued connection. Appointees may receive support from their home units—such as office space or administrative assistance—and may petition to retain graduate faculty status if appropriate to their work.
Nominations are initiated at the college level and submitted to the Office of Faculty Affairs in advance of a faculty member’s retirement. Appointments begin upon confirmation of emeritus status and approval by the Provost.
