The Penn State Faculty Writing Program

Writing is central to the research process. Developing productive writing skills and securing dedicated writing time is essential for faculty success. The Faculty Writing Program facilitates weekly accountability writing groups to support the writing practices and scholarly productivity of faculty across Penn State.

The Faculty Writing Program enables faculty to secure dedicated time each week for scholarly research and writing, supports the development of productive writing skills, and fosters a community of writers. We provide an accountable space for faculty members across the University system to join in building a sense of community outside their home departments while engaging in dedicated writing practices.

The Faculty Writing Program coordinates weekly groups that focus on the writing and research needs of faculty. These are not peer review groups for sharing work, but accountability groups aimed at supporting the writing process, the campus community, and scholarly productivity.

Our writing groups meet three hours per week during the Penn State Fall and Spring semesters. Each group begins with a 20-minute discussion led by a faculty co-facilitator. Our discussions focus on different professionalization topics such as goal setting and writing strategies. Group members then dedicate the rest of the session to independent research and writing. Writers set goals for their structured writing time and report on their progress at the end of each session.

The Faculty Writing Program is a designated Provost Endorsement Program.

Registration for this program is available in August and January annually. Please check back for a registration link prior to the start of each fall and spring academic semester.
