Research Review: AI-Use Ethics Matrix

Event Information
Date:
Wednesday, February 4, 2026 - 3:00pm to 4:20pm

The AI-Use Ethics Matrix is an analytic framework derived from a grounded theory coding of student interviews. It clarifies why students’ self-understandings of “ethical” AI use often diverge from institutional narratives about “cheating.” The matrix organizes cases by (X-axis) Intention & Effort toward Intellectual Flourishing by (Y-axis) Clarity & Support of Institutional Guidance, producing four empirically distinguishable quadrants that explain students’ rationales, emotions, and behaviors with GenAI.
